How to add them

• Copy and paste from this page or any symbol page.
• iPhone and Android: long-press keys for extra characters, for example - for • and —, and use the emoji keyboard's search. Save favourite symbols as text replacement shortcuts (how).
• Computer: edit your profile on the Instagram website and use Win+. on Windows or Ctrl+Cmd+Space on a Mac.

Line breaks

Press Return while editing the bio. If the layout gets squashed, write the bio in your notes app first, then paste it in one go. Instagram keeps bios short (the edit screen shows how many characters are left), and every symbol counts toward the limit, as do the invisible parts of some emoji.

Fancy fonts: the catch

A fancy text generator turns letters into look-alike maths symbols such as 𝓢𝓪𝓻𝓪 or 𝐒𝐚𝐫𝐚. They look striking, but:

• search inside Instagram may not match them to your real name;
• screen readers may read them as symbol names or skip them (why);
• some older phones show a few of them as boxes.

Use them for one decorative word, not for your name or contact details.

Emoji or text symbols?

Some characters, such as ❤ and ✔, appear as colour emoji on some phones and as plain symbols on others. If you want a consistent look, choose symbols that are never emoji, such as ♡, ✓ and ★ (emoji vs text symbols). For faces, try kaomoji like (◕‿◕).
