Symbols for Email Signatures (Phone, Email, Separators)

How-To Guides · 2 min read · Published October 25, 2026

Quick answer: for a signature that looks the same in every mail app, use |, • or · as separators and plain-text icons such as ✆ or ☏ for the phone. Avoid ☎ and ✉ if a colour emoji would bother you, because many phones show them as emoji. Always keep the actual number, address and links as text.

Example signatures

  • Classic: Ali Khan | Sales Lead | Example Ltd
    T: +44 20 7946 0000 · E: ali@example.com
  • With icons: ✆ +44 20 7946 0000 • ➤ example.com

Letters as labels (T:, M:, E:) are the most robust choice of all and need no special characters.

Typing the separators

  • | Shift+\ on US and UK keyboards (other layouts).
  • • Alt+0149 on Windows, Option+8 on a Mac (bullet guide).
  • · Alt+0183 on Windows, Shift+Option+9 on a Mac.
  • ✆ ☏ ✑ have no Alt code; copy them from this page, or in Outlook type the code (2706) and press Alt+X.

Where signatures break

  • Phones: emoji-capable symbols turn colour, and long lines wrap. Keep each line short.
  • Plain-text replies: formatting and images disappear; text symbols stay.
  • Images instead of text: logos and icon images are often blocked until the reader allows them, so never put the phone number or address only in an image.
  • Fancy fonts: a name in 𝓢𝓬𝓻𝓲𝓹𝓽 letters can't be searched or copied correctly; use the mail app's own font settings instead.

Accessibility

Screen readers say "white telephone" or skip the symbol entirely, so the label or the number itself must make sense without it. Separators like | may be read as "vertical bar" each time; the middle dot is usually quieter (symbols and screen readers).

Frequently asked questions

What is the best phone symbol for an email signature?

✆ (U+2706) or ☏ (U+260F). Both are plain text symbols. The black telephone ☎ is also an emoji and can turn into a colour picture on phones.

Why do my signature symbols turn into emoji on phones?

Some symbols, such as ☎, ✉ and ✔, are both text symbols and emoji. Phone mail apps often show the colour emoji version. Use symbols that are not emoji, or plain words.

Which separators are safe in an email signature?

The vertical bar |, the bullet • and the middle dot · are safe in every mail app. Put a space on each side.

Should I use symbols in an email signature at all?

A few, yes, as long as the information stays in words or digits. Labels such as T: and E: work everywhere and are clear to screen reader users.
