How to Make Heart Symbols (♥ ♡ ❤) with Your Keyboard

How-To Guides · 4 min read · Published August 20, 2026 · Updated August 27, 2026

The heart is the one "fun" symbol almost everyone wants to type, and there’s a genuinely satisfying keyboard trick for it: on Windows, Alt + 3 produces a solid black heart ♥. No leading zero, just Alt and the 3 on your numeric keypad.

That works because ♥ is one of the graphic characters baked into the original IBM PC code page 437, down in the low number range. Here are all your options.

Quick reference: every method

Every Alt code below is verified against the real Windows code pages — where none exists we say so, rather than list one that won’t work.

CharNameWindowsMacHTMLWord (Alt+X)Unicode
Black Heart Suit Alt+3 Copy / paste ♥ 2665 + Alt+X U+2665
White Heart Suit Copy / paste Copy / paste ♡ 2661 + Alt+X U+2661

Solid heart ♥

Windows: Alt + 3 (code page 437 graphic). HTML: ♥ or ♥. Word: 2665 then Alt+X. There is no standard single-key Mac shortcut — use copy-paste or the Character Viewer.

Outline / white heart ♡

The hollow heart ♡ has no Alt code (its codepoint is above 255). Copy it from the table below, or in Word type 2661 then Alt+X. In HTML use ♡.

The red heart emoji ❤️

The colourful red heart everyone uses in messages is an emoji, not the same character as ♥. Open the emoji keyboard — Win + . on Windows, the smiley key on phones — and search "heart" to find red, blue, sparkling and broken hearts. Browse them all on our emoji picker.

Handy tips

  • Alt+3 is one of a small set of low-range codes that really work — others include Alt+1 (☺), Alt+6 (♠), Alt+5 (♣) and Alt+4 (♦).
  • The card-suit heart ♥ and the emoji red heart look different across apps — pick based on where you’re pasting.
  • On phones, long-press isn’t needed — just open the emoji keyboard and search.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Alt code for a heart?

Alt+3 on Windows (no leading zero) gives a solid heart ♥. This one genuinely works because it comes from the DOS code page 437.

How do I type a heart on a Mac?

There’s no default single-key shortcut. Use the Character Viewer (Control+Cmd+Space) and search "heart", or copy it from this page.

Is ♥ the same as the heart emoji?

No. ♥ is a text symbol; the red heart ❤️ is an emoji with its own codepoint and colour rendering.
