Symbols Cheat Sheet: Alt Codes, Mac Shortcuts, Unicode and HTML

How-To Guides · 4 min read · Published October 25, 2026

Quick answer: this page lists 76 of the most-used symbols with every reliable way to type them: the Windows Alt code (only where a real one exists), the Mac shortcut, the Word Alt+X code and the HTML code. The tables are generated from our symbol database, so no code is typed by hand. Click any symbol for its full page.

Quick reference: every method

Every Alt code below is verified against the real Windows code pages — where none exists we say so, rather than list one that won’t work.

How to read the columns

  • Windows Alt code: hold Alt and type the number on the numeric keypad with Num Lock on. Only codes 0–255 exist: Alt+number uses code page 437 and Alt+0+number uses Windows-1252, so the leading 0 matters. "none" means the symbol has no real Alt code. Codes above 255 do not work in most Windows programs; they only work in programs built on Microsoft's RichEdit text control, such as WordPad.
  • Mac: Option shortcuts on a US keyboard layout. "Character Viewer" means there is no shortcut; press Ctrl+Cmd+Space and search.
  • Word Alt+X: type the code in Word or Outlook and press Alt+X. The same hex code works with Ctrl+Shift+U on Linux and Chromebooks.
  • HTML: paste the entity or number into web page code.

Frequently asked questions

How do I use an Alt code from this cheat sheet?

Turn on Num Lock, hold the left Alt key, type the number on the numeric keypad including any leading 0, and release Alt. The number row above the letters does not work.

Why do some symbols say none in the Alt code column?

Real numpad Alt codes only exist for 0 to 255. Codes above 255 do not work in most Windows programs; they only work in programs built on Microsoft's RichEdit text control, such as WordPad. Use the Word Alt+X code or copy-paste for those symbols.

How do I use the Word Alt+X code?

In Word or Outlook, type the hex code, for example 2713, and press Alt + X right after it. The code turns into the symbol.

Do these Alt codes work on a Mac?

No. On a Mac use the Option shortcut from the Mac column, or press Ctrl + Cmd + Space to open the Character Viewer for symbols without a shortcut.
