₹ or ₨?
| Sign | Name | Used for | Word Alt+X |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹ | Indian rupee sign | Indian rupee (INR) | 20B9 |
| ₨ | rupee sign | generic "Rs" ligature; seen for Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Nepalese and Mauritian rupees | 20A8 |
In practice, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nepal mostly write Rs or Rs. in plain letters, and banks use the ISO codes PKR, LKR and NPR. ₨ is a single character that looks like "Rs" and is less common.
A young symbol
The ₹ design was chosen by the Indian government in July 2010 and added to Unicode 6.0 later that year. Software older than that, and some decorative fonts, still lack it, which is why it sometimes appears as a box (fix). Writing Rs or INR is a safe fallback in plain-text systems.

Frequently asked questions
What is the keyboard shortcut for ₹?
On Windows with the English (India) keyboard, press Right Alt + 4 (or Ctrl + Alt + 4). In Word or Outlook on any keyboard, type 20B9 and press Alt + X.
Is there an Alt code for the rupee sign?
No. ₹ is U+20B9, far above 255, and real numpad Alt codes only exist for 0 to 255. Codes above 255 do not work in most Windows programs; they only work in programs built on Microsoft's RichEdit text control, such as WordPad.
Which symbol is used for the Pakistani rupee?
Pakistan has no unique sign in Unicode; Rs or Rs. is most common, and the generic rupee sign ₨ (U+20A8) is sometimes used. For invoices, the currency code PKR is clearest.
Why does ₹ show as a box or as a different symbol?
The sign was added to Unicode in 2010, so very old fonts don't have it. Choose a current font such as Segoe UI, Arial or Noto Sans.
